Research shows aspen forests slow wildfire spread

A new study from Colorado State University, Western Colorado University and the U.S. Forest Service found evidence that stands of aspen trees could resist wildfires by slowing a fire’s advance or changing its course. The researchers found that even modest increases in aspen cover dramatically reduced the rate at which fires spread. Their findings suggest that aspen forests can act as natural firebreaks, which is valuable information for land managers and agencies.

Study examines engagement outcomes for wolf reintroduction

A recent study found that while there was some improvement in social outcomes after the engagement process for Colorado’s wolf restoration and management plan, such as an increase in knowledge and acceptance of certain management strategies like compensation for livestock losses, the process did not appear to impact social conflict or trust in decision-makers.

Study finds early signs of widespread coastal marsh decline

Researchers have revealed the declining health of coastal marshes several years before visible signs of decline, providing an early warning and opportunity to protect an ecosystem that serves as the first line of defense against coastal flooding. Scientists from Colorado State University, the University of Georgia and the University of Texas at Austin developed a model to detect early signs of marsh decline using satellite observations. The model identified vulnerable marshes along Georgia’s coast by locating declining root production – a harbinger of marsh failure.

Research aims to better predict and understand cascading land surface hazards

When an extreme weather event occurs, the probability or risk of other events can often increase, leading to what researchers call “cascading” hazards. For example, wildfires can prime the Earth’s surface for landslides or debris flows, and hurricanes can lead to inland flooding. Dozens of researchers, including the Department of Geosciences' Sean Gallen, have outlined a new framework to better predict, understand and forecast the cascade (or chain reaction) of hazards across the landscape.

A Wild Partnership: Colorado Natural Heritage and City of Louisville bring science and discovery to urban natural areas

When scientists join community members and municipalities to work toward better land-use, with recreation and intergenerational learning added to the mix, you have the makings for a BioBlitz. The City of Louisville Open Space division approached the Colorado Natural Heritage Program with ambitious objectives: Survey the species diversity of Louisville’s 800+ acres of public open space, tap scientific experts to guide the research and document the data, and involve local community volunteers who would also document findings using iNaturalist – all in a three-day event.

22 CES revitalizes McConnell creek and protects infrastructure with revetment project

The 22nd Civil Engineer Squadron teamed up with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands in a stream bank revetment project on the southern tip of McConnell Air Force Base this past July. “A stream bank revetment is a structure that’s put in place on the stream bank to help prevent and slow down erosion and stabilize it,” said Natalie Wildrom, 22nd CES biologist. “In our case, we happen to use red cedars.”
