ADDRESSING GEORGIA'S PROJECTED NURSING SHORTAGE
|
New projections from the HRSA National Center for Health Workforce Analysis highlight a growing nursing workforce crisis, with Georgia among the top 10 states facing significant shortages. By 2037, Georgia is projected to have a 17% shortage of registered nurses, equating to nearly 19,000 full-time equivalent RNs needed to meet demand. Non-metro areas will experience the most severe shortages, exacerbating healthcare disparities across the state. These findings underscore the urgent need for strategic workforce initiatives, policy changes, and academic-industry partnerships to strengthen nursing education and retention efforts.

Date: Thursday, March 6, 2025
Crossover Day is a pivotal point in the Georgia legislative session, marking the deadline by which bills must pass out of their originating chamber to remain viable for consideration. This year, Crossover Day falls on Thursday, March 6, 2025. For the nursing community, this date is especially significant as it determines the progression of legislation that can impact healthcare policies, nursing practices, and patient care standards across the state. Staying informed about the bills advancing beyond Crossover Day enables nurses to engage in advocacy efforts, provide feedback to legislators, and prepare for potential changes affecting the profession. To track the status of specific bills and understand their implications, nurses are encouraged to utilize resources such as the Georgia General Assembly's official website and updates from professional nursing organizations. Active participation and awareness are crucial in shaping the future of healthcare in Georgia.

Legislation impacting healthcare access is underway. Senate Bill 262, introduced by Senator Halpern with bipartisan support, aims to protect Georgians' access to life-saving preventive health services—including cancer screenings, wellness visits, and mental health screenings—without financial barriers. With the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Kennedy v. Braidwood, nearly 5 million Georgians could lose guaranteed access to no-cost preventive care if existing protections are overturned. Stay informed and take action. View the latest legislative update from Georgians for a Healthy Future, and follow them for ongoing updates throughout the session.
