A driver of innovation, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities among students, the City Schools' VEX Robotics season wrapped up recently with the Maryland State Championships. Congratulations to the amazing participating schools and student teams who shined during the statewide competition! Overall, City Schools has the top elementary and high school teams in the State. Last year, we had the top elementary and middle school teams in the state!
High School City Schools had 5 of the 56 teams that qualified for State. Poly won the top award at the tournament, the Excellence Award, and earned a spot to the World Championship in Dallas, Texas next month. Middle School City Schools had 12 of the 30 teams that qualified for State. BIA finished 4th overall, Teamwork Challenge and Robot Skills. Judges Award Winner: BIA and Commodore John Rodgers
Two middle schools from Hazelwood also competed in the CREATE US Open in Iowa and received sixth place.
Elementary School City Schools had 14 of the 24 teams that qualified for State. Tournament Champions: Commodore John Rodgers and Arlington (both heading to World Championships) Excellence Award Winner: Commodore John Rodgers Tournament Finalist: Arlington
Robot Skills Champion: Commodore John Rodgers Judges Award Winner: Furman Templeton
City Schools' participation has grown from 72 teams in the 2021-2022 school year to over 186 teams this year! We also had 24 First Lego League (FLL) teams, up from 20 last year. By providing a platform for hands-on, real-world robotics challenges, the program equips students with essential skills for future careers in STEM fields. |

The district's Let's Get Hyped event was a rousing success! Student participated in interactive workshops and discussions tailored to guide them towards fulfilling their educational and professional aspirations. One student even commented, "This was an amazing event!" |

| Authors Joel Gambill and Stephen McGill conducted a read-aloud session at Liberty in observance of National SEL Day. Fourth and fifth graders, joined by members of the Student Wholeness team, pledged to utilize their voices as SEL superpowers to advocate for themselves and their peers. |

Community members experienced the magic of school breakfast at Belmont during National School Breakfast Week. From cafeteria managers and coaches to Senators and farmers (even Poe from the Ravens) – everyone knows that a healthy start to the day is something to celebrate! |

Baltimore City Public Schools is building a strong foundation of learning and academic success. Students attending our pre-K programs outperformed the State average for proficiency on the MD Kindergarten Readiness Assessment by 6%. Read more on our website. |

| Hamilton Gallery's 17th Annual Student Art Exhibit features artwork from several schools in the Northeast Baltimore neighborhoods: City Neighbors Hamilton, City Neighbors High School, Garrett Heights, and Hamilton. The exhibit runs until March 17; stop by and see the amazing work by our students!

At Collington Square, Ms. Pressley’s and Mr. Taylor’s co-taught sixth-grade class is diving deep into the literary analysis of the text “Blood on the River.” They are exploring the profound impact of James’ death on Jamestown’s social dynamics and its role in advancing key themes. |

Science students at Govans have been learning about the history of the Earth and what we can learn from fossils. They had some hands-on learning in class by "digging" for fossils! |

BIA West third grade Spanish immersion class with Ms. Cintron. For their IB unit 'How the World Works' they listened to Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. They've made a commitment to change the world, starting with one positive action each. |

GAL students in grades one and two, led by their teacher Mrs. Samuel, explored the significance of animal shelters and supported the SPCA by selling homemade keychains, raising $300. |

Ms. Hoy’s second-grade class at Graceland Park/O'Donnell Heights recently got new books and "reading buddies" (stuffed animals they can have sit with them while they read). The plushie toy helps encourage reading and fosters a sense of enjoyment in the process! |

| | BDS architecture sophomores visited a construction site today with architecture firm Ayers Saint Gross and Whiting-Turner. Students got to see the JHH future research lab in progress and learned about how Whiting Turner uses BIM technology to detect coordination issues before they start building. |

| Benjamin Franklin's Towson dual enrollment class, taught by Ms. Joy, took part in a toxic tour of Curtis Bay to study local environmental injustices and their impact on neighborhoods. The class, focusing on American Anthropology and Activism, offers students 3 college credits upon completion.

Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students from Leith Walk recently spent a week in North Bay. The trip focuses on outdoor exploration and bonding! |

For Women's History Month, middle school students from Westport attended "An Evening with Misty Copeland" the first African American Principal Dancer with the American Ballet Theatre. |

Baer School celebrated National Rare Disorder/ Disease Day. Many of the students at Baer have very rare conditions such as Angelman Syndrome, Sturge Weber Syndrome and Dravet Syndrome. Parents were treated to a Baer “Cup of Comfort" SEL activity and enjoyed breakfast together. They also heard from Danielle Rigby, the coordinator of the Angelman Walk in Baltimore this Spring. |
| Principal Williams leads Harambee at Collington Square every Wednesday morning to help create a positive school community. Every grade level from Pre-K - 8th participates. The school has noticed an increase in attendance including less tardies on Wednesdays because of these efforts.

Mary Ann Winterling students participated in Book Blast, an event to build their personal libraries. We love seeing the excitement over reading. |

Cherry Hill, with their community school coordinator Octavia Hike and the OPG's (organized parent group) help, hosted a Winter Formal Dance for the elementary students. |
| Morrell Park held a Superhero Dance! Scholars were able to bring their favorite adult, dress up as a superhero (or in their best dance attire) and dance the night away!

Yorkwood celebrated all things Math at Yorkwood's Family Math Night. Students, families, and staff, came together to engage in activities, play math games, and learn about math strategies. |

Ms. Bradshaw helped to organize Black History Month celebration at Furley. Students recognized the significant contributions of African Americans to American history by performing dances and dramatic events. |

"Ms. Nisa makes a choice to be committed to the needs of Harford Heights students and their families. She is willing to help out in any capacity to ensure everyone has a good day.
