Winning Wednesday

Sharing good news from across the district that celebrates our students, staff and progress!

Learning doesn't stop, even on Spring Break for City Schools students. Groups of students across the district packed their bags and traveled abroad! Forest Park students headed to Greece where they were able to tour several ancient sites. Patterson Park students visited Southeast Asia and learned not only about the culture and history of the places they stayed, but also the food. BIA students stayed with host families and fully immersed themselves in the life, traditions, and culture of China. Students from Design School traveled to Costa Rica and even visited a pineapple plantation. No matter where your Spring Break took you this year, we are so glad to have you back in class

Forest Park Foresters Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) cadets took part in a service learning initiative by contributing their time at the Maryland Food Bank. The students engaged in tasks involving the preparation and packaging of food destined for after-school programs and individuals in need, extending assistance to approximately 10,000 students across the Baltimore Area.

Coppin Academy's Annual Career Expo featured a vendor fair with participation from various businesses and organizations, including Chick-fil-A, Kutz by Carter, Empire Beauty Schools, North American Trade Schools, BCCC, Marine Corps, Shoppers, Baltimore City Fire Department, League of Women Voters, and Bailey's Heart and Soul Foundation.

The Office of Equity's BMore Me Program launched its second Speaker Series at Coppin State University in collaboration with the Office of Youth Engagement, NLD Strategic, and the Student Design Team. Ninety-five middle school students from Beechfield, Garrett Heights, North Bend, and Thomas Jefferson actively participated in panel discussions and breakouts that centered on the theme, "Our school is part of our history. We deserve to reimagine." During the breakouts, students created murals that reflected student visions for reimagined schools.

Snapshots of Learning

Every day is a great day to learn at City Schools!

Take a peek into what our students are learning in classrooms around the district.

Fifth and sixth-grade students from Hamilton are actively engaged in Southwest Airlines' Adopt-A-Pilot program. Fifth-grade students learned how to plot coordinates with their designated pilot Captain Isenstadt. The program offers STEM-focused activities and experiments to help foster an interest in aviation careers.

Ms. Unger's Nature Explorers class at Holabird is learning about biodegradable vs. conventional plastics by discovering what happens when you place each kind of plastic in water.

Mrs. Callahan's first graders at The Green School were unable to catch mischievous leprechauns who visited during St. Patrick's Day, despite their attempts to design traps. The playful activity encouraged problem-solving skills and creativity, offering a fun STEM experience for the students.

Ms. Mitzel's seventh-grade Science class at Green Street has teamed up with Project Bioeyes for an intriguing project focused on zebrafish. These small tropical fish, originating from Southeast Asia, possess similarities to humans in terms of cell structure and DNA. Through this partnership, GSA scholars will explore these model organisms across their entire life cycle.

Second-grade Spanish immersion students at BIA West, led by Ms. Gomez, are enjoying an exploration of the water cycle. They concentrated on the concept of precipitation and created their own miniature storms in jars.

Kindergartners in Mrs. Smith's class at Mary Ann Winterling are about to start their Weather and Climate unit and they got to kick off their learning with some help from  WJZ's Weather Lab! They learned about meteorology and what meteorologists do at work. The students then reported the weather in front of a green screen. The weather and students futures look bright from here.

Family Engagement

Claremont held its annual Women's Day event. Participants engaged in various activities aligned with this year's theme: Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

Western hosted a Donuts & Dialogue panel discussion with Black Girls Vote CEO Ms. Nyki Robinson and Associate of Legislative Affairs in the City Council President's Office Taylor-Omaree Smith. The panel was moderated by Senior Dove and SGA Officer Jade Davis.

Ms. Sherie Jeffreys' music class at Calvin M. Rodwell learned about key women in music history. Ms. Jeffreys and eighth-grade student Michael also created a Women's History Month tribute video celebrating women through song, dance, and artwork.

School Spirit and Celebrations

Westport students who had perfect attendance for March participated in the Perfect Attendance Paint Party. The theme of the chosen image was "I Love School."

Beechfield's Family Game Night was a hit! Families enjoyed a mix of literacy, math, and STEM activities, including science experiments by the Science Guys of Baltimore and Math Jeopardy.

John Ruhrah held grade-level spelling bees to prepare for a school-wide bee in June!

Cross Country's Green Team teamed up with the Mt. Washington Improvement Association to host a clean-up in the school community.

Govans students and staff celebrated Wacky Day in some pretty wacky ways!

The winners of the Mayor's Black History Art Project were a group of middle school students from Highlandtown #215 who worked together to create this mural of Reginald F. Lewis.
