Sharing good news from across the district that celebrates our students, staff and progress!

Students from the Green Machines Environmental Club at Booker T. Washington were with Governor Wes Moore at the Maryland Department of the Environment’s headquarters in Baltimore in celebration of Earth Day. The Green Machines, led by eighth science teacher Robin Lewis, were on hand to help with a ceremonial tree planting and witness as the Governor signed an executive order establishing the Maryland Outdoor Learning Partnership—a new group of state agencies, educators, and nonprofits tasked with ensuring Maryland students have meaningful access to outdoor education that centers the environment, climate, and the natural world.

Commissioner Salley visited the Moravia Park Judy Center in partnership with the Science Nerds to support pre-kindergarten students. It was a wonderful event that promoted science and strengthened kindergarten readiness skills.

BSA seniors recently performed in the school's Symphonic Wind Ensemble Concert. Congratulations, seniors!

Hampstead Hill hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the expansion of additional classrooms and a new gymnasium.

Pre-K through first-grade students at Hampstead Hill attended an Arts for Learning assembly. Students listened to a story about a horse who wanted to tap dance, and helped to act out the story with their own dance moves.

Dunbar held a candle making workshop for sixty students who achieved the highest number of days on-time and in uniform for school! 

City Schools, Lee Lee Kiddz, and Baltimore County Public Schools, in partnerships with schools such as Beechfield, launched the first-ever middle school girls flag football league in the State of Maryland!

Earth Day Celebrations

Students, staff, families, and community members marked Earth Day throughout the district with various activities. These included community cleanups, special assemblies, service projects, tree plantings, school gardens, and more!

Every day is a Earth Day through our green and sustainable programs.

Pre-K students from Windsor Hills celebrated Earth Day by collecting natural elements to create a celebratory poster. All of the items were repurposed materials.

Snapshots of Learning
 

Every day is a great day to learn at City Schools!

Take a peek into what our students are learning in classrooms around the district.

Digital Harbor students took part in this year's trout release at Dead Run in Jerusalem Mills. Students have been raising 180 Rainbow Trout eggs since December.

Pre-K students in Berol Dewdney's class at Commodore John Rodgers have been learning about 3D shapes, learning about the solar system, building fine motor skills and more - all through play-based learning.

Seventh-grade students in Hampstead Hill's Nature Exploration class with Ms. Riorda have been experimenting to learn about the properties of water.

Art teacher Ms. Leah McCollum introduced American artist Jim Dine to the fourth- and fifth-grade students at New Song. Some of Dine's prominent works center on the shape of the heart. Students created their own artwork  and then explained what the shape of a heart symbolized to them personally.

Spanish immersion students at BIA West in Ms. Gomez' second-grade class held a classroom science fair and shared their findings with the judges.

Students from Ms. Settle's second-grade class at Curtis Bay were able to work on Fundations while enjoying the beautiful Spring day outside.

 
Family Engagement

Patterson Park seventh-grade students have been learning about the Harlem Renaissance through EL Education in class. They took a trip to New York City to see the current Harlem Renaissance exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Students from Ms. Hegarty and Ms. Childress's Pre-AP Visual Arts and AP Drawing classes at Western traveled to the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York City to explore the Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys exhibit. This marks the inaugural public display of the collection, offering students a unique encounter with "Giant" artworks that exemplify the contemporary Black Art movement in grand scale and significance. 

Ms. Kline's fourth-grade class from Beechfield traveled to Great Kids Farm. They fed the farm animals, learned about sustainable farming practices, planted seeds, and explored the farm's vibrant ecosystem.

 
Family Engagement

Claremont with activities for families and students to celebrate everyone's uniqueness. This included career activities (like resume building and interview prep), art projects, and a bazaar where students exhibited and sold their art.

Staff at The Stadium School wore shirts to celebrate Autism Acceptance Month!

Sandtown-Winchester celebrated Autism Acceptance Month by having each homeroom teacher and resource teacher design a puzzle piece to display. Students also participated in discussions about autism and being accepted for "who" we are.

 
Community Engagement
 

Katrina Armwood, Community School Coordinator and the team at Edmondson-Westside hosted a Family Appreciation Day! In addition, families who completed the Family Survey were able to “shop” for hygiene products and cleaning supplies.

Creative City kicked off its Trauma-Informed Care & Movement series with Evan Hall, certified yoga and mindfulness instructor, and former Creative City parent! Caregivers and students alike explored new techniques to find inner peace and tranquility. 

Carver held a Collective Impact Meeting with over 20 community partners. Thanks to Bruce Nelson, Community School Specialist and team for organizing.

Hamilton STEM's night was jammed packed with multiple engineering challenge tables, including a table with The Science Guys of Baltimore, creature encounters with echoes of nature, and a VEX robotics demonstration. Community partners from BGE and City Schools' judged our Middle School Science Fair and Upper Elementary Invention Models. 

The ESOL Team at Moravia Park organized a Multicultural Night that included different stations, performances, and cultural food for families and students.

Montebello hosted their first One School One Book with the story of Cinderella. Students read a variety of multicultural versions of Cinderella throughout the week. One day, the characters of Cinderella (members of the ILT) made a surprise visit to the students. All students were given a copy of the book "Cinderella: Stories Around the World" by Cari Meister.

 
School Spirit and Celebrations
 

Furley hosted a Teacher Swap Day! Teachers swapped with each other to teach different classes. 

Patterson celebrated their seniors' achievements with an incentive trip to a local bowling alley and arcade, marking the culmination of their hard work during the third quarter. More than 100 students, who were passing all their grades and on track to graduate participated in the event.

John Ruhrah's PTO held their first community clean up. This event  focused on the school grounds and they hope to have more events before the end of the school year.
