These South Pole Seismometers Will Detect Vibrations 1.5 Miles Under the Ice

More than 1.5 miles below the surface at the South Pole, lie two seismometers – the deepest of their kind – built to withstand the extreme pressure, cold, and magnetic interference in one of Earth’s harshest environments. The new seismometers help “fill an enormous, continent-scale gap in our high-quality coverage of the Earth,” said Rick Aster, professor in the Department of Geosciences.

People ski on manmade snow.

Ski resorts are increasingly reliant on snowmaking. But at what cost?

This winter’s snow cover is the lowest on record in the West and in Colorado, with less than a third of Arapahoe Basin’s runs open. Resorts are relying more on snowmaking, but Steven Fassnacht, professor in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability, said major expansion would be difficult because it would require costly, complex new water rights.

Study examines why some invasive rats carry more parasites than others

Georgia Titcomb, assistant professor in Warner College of Natural Resources’ Department of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology, recently co-authored an article in ISME Communications on factors that influence infection patterns of protozoan parasites in invasive black rats in Madagascar. The research examined why some animals carry more parasites and spread disease more easily than others.

Alaska’s glacial lakes are expanding, increasing the risk of destructive outburst floods

Dan McGrath, associate professor in the Department of Geosciences, and his colleagues documented the evolution of 140 of the largest glacial lakes in Alaska between 2018-2024. Their study found that these glacial lakes are expanding about 120% faster on average today than they were from 1986-1999. McGrath further explains the study's findings in The Conversation.
