As the Alexander Mountain Fire grew to more than 6,700 acres on July 31, crews continued to fight the blaze from the ground and sky, with the promise of a Complex Incident Management Team coming August 1 to assume control. The move will raise the level of importance of the Alexander Mountain Fire over other large wildfires burning in the western U.S., "because that’s really what we’re competing with right now in terms of personnel and crews," according to Camille Stevens-Rumann, a former wildland firefighter and associate professor in CSU's Department of Forest and Rangeland Stewardship.

Twice a year, the California tiger salamanders travel between their breeding ponds and their burrows. Unfortunately, at Travis Air Force Base in central California, their route includes runways and streets. That puts the federally protected animals at risk—which could also put the military mission at risk. That’s where CSU’s Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands comes in. CEMML staff manage the California tiger salamander population at Travis AFB as part of a broad program to support the base’s natural resources and ensure compliance with federal and state environmental laws.
