Emory Nursing Spotlight

Upcoming Events

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) Foundation has awarded its 2023 Strategic Research Grant for "Bringing Sleep Education for Children with Autism into Communities: A Dissemination and Implementation Project" to Susan Brasher PhD, CPNP-PC, Assistant Professor with Emory University's Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing and Beth Malow, MD of Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The AASM Foundation funds high-impact projects that are aimed at improving sleep health for all. Over the past 25 years, the AASM Foundation has invested more than $25 million in funding career development, high-impact research, clinical training and community initiatives. The AASM Foundation funding will support Drs. Brasher and Malow’s career trajectory in advancing their experience in dissemination and implementation related to behavioral sleep education.

Within pediatric sleep medicine, one of the greatest challenges encountered is getting information to families who face disparities in access to care. Drs. Brasher and Malow previously received support from the AASM to train community therapists (in partnership with academic sleep experts) to carry out parent-based sleep education for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and documented feasibility and effectiveness. In this dissemination and implementation project, they will extend this therapist training program to make sleep education accessible to families that encounter racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and geographic disparities. Therapists will have access to materials developed previously by the research team, including a manualized curriculum, and will participate in a novel supportive online community that enhances co-learning and promotes self-efficacy. The training program will reach underserved populations and is generalizable beyond ASD to a range of additional disabilities and underserved populations.

The Winship American Cancer Society has awarded its Institutional Research Grant Program to Jinbing Bai RN, MSN, PhD, FAAN, Assistant Professor with Emory University's Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing. This grant will support Dr. Bai's innovative research project titled "Testing the Feasibility of a Transportation for Cancer Care Navigation Tool (TRACT) in Solid Tumors Patients Receiving Radiotherapy."

Patients undergoing radiotherapy for cancer often encounter transportation challenges that can significantly hinder their access to cancer care. Individuals facing racial and ethnic disparities, economic hardships, lack of insurance, or residing in rural areas are particularly vulnerable to travel barriers. The routine assessment of travel challenges and the implementation of effective interventions to address transportation needs for cancer patients are currently limited.

This research grant project aims to refine and evaluate the feasibility of the Transportation for Cancer Care Navigation Tool (TRACT) among patients with solid tumors undergoing radiotherapy and facing travel barriers. The TRACT program, developed based on the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Social and Medical Care Integration Framework, will promote health equity by mitigating the impact of socioeconomic and geographic disadvantages on cancer treatment outcomes. This research project will establish a Community Advisory Board to refine the TRACT program and utilize a pre-test post-test design to assess its feasibility. Patients with solid tumors undergoing radiotherapy will be screened for travel barriers, and thirty eligible patients will receive the 3-month TRACT program.

ORCID ID REQUIREMENT

Last semester, Emory began a campaign to have all researchers’ Open Researcher and Contributor IDs (ORCID) linked to Emory University. As a reminder, ORCID is a global not-for-profit organization that offers researchers a unique digital persistent identifier (DPI) that accurately connects you to your scholarly work throughout your career. Getting and using a free ORCID iD can help researchers save time and get credit for their work in funding, publishing, and research reporting workflows. Funding organizations, including the NIH, require ORCID iDs or similar identifiers to apply for and receive federal funds.
